February is Age-Related Macular Degeneration & Low Vision Awareness Month. Age-Related Macular Degeneration (or AMD) causes damage to the macula, the part of the eye that lets us see objects that are straight ahead. The most common symptom of AMD is a blurred area near the center of vision.

For some, AMD advances so slowly that vision loss takes a long time to occur. In others, the disease progresses faster and may lead to a loss of vision in one or both eyes.

AMD by itself does not lead to complete blindness. However, the loss of central vision can interfere with simple everyday activities, such as the ability to see faces, drive, read, write, or do close work, such as cooking or fixing things around the house.

While there is no cure for AMD, detection and treatment may slow disease and prevent severe loss of vision.

With August being Children’s Eye Health & Safety Month, South Jersey Eye Associates has asked our very own Optometric Physician, Dr. Russell W. Chappius III to present SJEA’s “Eye on Vision” for August.

In this video, Dr. Chappius gives us his thoughts on the importance of eye exams for children of all ages, especially as they prepare for school in the fall. Even if your child doesn’t complain about or exhibit eye problems, poor vision can still greatly impact their learning.

Dr. Chappius also mentions that one of his biggest concerns is myopia or near-sightedness. He has been seeing an increase in this diagnosis in children lately, due in part to the use of phones and tablets being introduced at an earlier age. A baseline examination is recommended as myopia can lead to other complications down the road. This baseline exam will also give your eye doctor an opportunity to check for hereditary retinal diseases that often present themselves during childhood.

SJEA Announces the Addition of Dr. Samantha A. Miletta to the SJEA Family!

Dr. Samantha A. Miletta will officially join the trusted eyecare and eyewear center as an Optometric Physician on June 3, 2024, and will practice primary care optometry primarily at its Millville location.

Dr. Brandon J. Wuzzardo, Optometric Physician and owner of SJEA, expressed enthusiasm for the newest member of his staff. Together with Dr. Russell W. Chappius III, who has been with SJEA since 2020, the on-site doctors and affiliated specialists strive to offer South Jersey the latest in vision care services, all with a patient-first philosophy.

“We’re thrilled to have Dr. Miletta, a compassionate and highly trained physician, join South Jersey Eye Associates,” said Dr. Wuzzardo, “Being from the area, many of our patients already know Dr. Miletta personally. She is a wonderful addition to our team and will help us continue to provide our patients with Eyecare At Its Best.”

Dr. Miletta graduated from Rowan University in December 2019 with a bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences and will graduate from Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Salus University in May 2024. She was a long-time patient at South Jersey Eye Associates and shadowed Dr. Brandon J. Wuzzardo for several years before starting optometry school.

Dr. Miletta’s training consisted of an internship at The Eye Institute, with externships at Cassey’s Optical, Gubman Eye Associates, Wilmington VA Medical Center, South Jersey Eye Associates, and William Feinbloom Vision Rehabilitation Center at The Eye Institute which specializes in low vision training. These externships included training in contact lenses, ocular disease, and low vision. While at SJEA, Dr. Miletta completed her optical clerkship in July 2021 and completed a 3-month externship from November 2023 through February 2024.

A lifelong resident of Fairton, Dr. Miletta exclaims, “SJEA has always made me feel like family—from being a patient to now being an optometrist in the practice. I am excited to be able to give back to the community I grew up in!”

April is Sports Eye Safety Month and our doctors at SJEA want to help you keep your eyes healthy anytime you are participating in sports activities. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that over 30,000 sports-related eye injuries are reported every year. Most of these eye injuries are preventable.

Eye protection is not only for prescription wearers, but for anyone active in sports. In fact, regular eyeglasses and contact lenses provide little or no protection and regular eyewear may even cause an eye injury when worn while participating in a sporting event.

To prevent injury, athletes are advised to wear eye protection that may include safety glasses and goggles, safety shields, and eye guards designed for a particular sport and that meet American Society for Testing and Materials(ASTM) standards.

Athletes also need to visit their eye doctor regularly for comprehensive eye care so that they can perform their best on the court or field with clear and healthy vision.

South Jersey’s Comprehensive Eyecare and Eyewear Center has acquired the Optometry Practice of Dr. Lynne Porreca in Millville, New Jersey

South Jersey Eye Associates, PA (SJEA) is excited to announce, as it celebrates its 35th Anniversary, the expansion of its practice to include the optometry practice of Dr. Lynne M. Porreca, located in Millville, New Jersey. The Millville and Bridgeton locations will operate under the South Jersey Eye Associates, PA name and act as one entity.

“Dr. Lynne Porreca, having more than 38 years of experience, is a well-respected and caring physician who maintains the same patient-first philosophy that we have at SJEA.” said Dr. Brandon J. Wuzzardo, Optometric Physician and owner of South Jersey Eye Associates. “This opportunity ensures that Dr. Porreca’s existing patients will continue to receive the highest level of vision care and provides SJEA with the ability to reach and better serve more of the South Jersey region.”

Dr. Porreca will continue to practice optometry and see her patients at the Millville location. Both Dr. Wuzzardo and Dr. Russell W. Chappius III, an optometric physician who joined SJEA in July of last year, will primarily practice out of the Bridgeton location. A plan is being developed to also offer their services in Millville in the near future for the convenience of new patients.

“I am thrilled to be working with Dr. Wuzzardo and Dr. Chappius in association with South Jersey Eye Associates,” Dr. Porreca expressed her enthusiasm for this new venture. “They are highly-trained and skilled physicians who have purposely chosen, as I have done, to make the vision needs of South Jersey their main focus.”

Recycle Your Contact Lenses? It’s as Easy as 1-2-3

South Jersey Eye Associates can help you make proper contact lens recycling a part of your routine. Our office is now participating in the Bausch + Lomb ONE by ONE Recycling Program, where any used blister packs, top foil, and lenses can be recycled, no matter the brand. Just drop them off in the recycling bin located in our entrance lobby, as shown below with SJEA’s Dr. Russell W. Chappius III.

Upon request, South Jersey Eye Associates also has small reusable recycling bins that you can take home to collect your recyclable materials before dropping them off into our main bin.

For every 10 pounds collected, TerraCycle will donate $10 to Optometry Giving Sight, which funds programs to deliver desperately needed vision care, train local eye care professionals, and develop sustainable infrastructure in developing countries.

SJEA Re-Opens for Annual Exams and Wellness Visits

Dear SJEA family,

First and foremost, we hope that you and your family continue to be safe during this unprecedented time of crisis. The last couple of months have been extremely difficult for most and we hope that everyone is well and that we all come out stronger in the end.

The doctors and staff at South Jersey Eye Associates would like to send an enormous amount of gratitude to all the healthcare and essential workers who have been on the frontlines, especially to those in our own community. Your heroism and selflessness have not gone unnoticed, so THANK YOU.

Since the beginning of this pandemic, we have been monitoring the federal, state, local board, and CDC/health expert guidelines and recommendations. Last week, Governor Murphy lifted the restrictions that were put on routine and elective medical care. This allows SJEA to re-open our doors to annual exams and wellness visits.

SJEA is excited to be able to serve our community’s eye care needs once again, starting this Tuesday, May 26th.

Although this is a big step towards “normal,” we know that we must keep our patients and our staff protected at all costs. We will continue to monitor the cases in and surrounding our area and approach this in a step-by-step fashion, ramping up our volume as we go along. We will also be implementing the following changes to ensure your safety for the foreseeable future:

1. All patients and staff must wear a mask/cloth covering. We ask that you please bring your own as there is a national shortage and we cannot provide one for each patient. If you do not abide by this, you will not be seen.

2. You will be screened for COVID-19 symptoms. This is mandated by the state, so please expect the questions. We ask if you are feeling under the weather or have been in contact with someone with COVID in the last 2 weeks, please reschedule after 2 weeks since exposure/sickness.

3. Your temperature will be taken on arrival. This will be done with a non-contact forehead thermometer. It will be done on staff and patients upon arrival. If your temperature is elevated above 100 degrees, you will be asked to reschedule after 2 weeks. If refused, you will not be seen.

4. Contactless Check-in. There is no longer the need to call the office to let us know you are here. We will great you at the door and your exam will begin in a timely fashion.

5. No guests allowed. Only the patient that is scheduled for an exam will be allowed in the office unless you are a minor or in need of assistance (one adult can accompany the patient in this case).

6. No walk-in appointments will be available. Exams and optical shopping will be done by appointment only.

7. Patient spacing. We have decreased available appointment times and spread them out to limit the number of patients in the office at once. We have also rearranged the patient lobby to abide by the recommended social distancing of 6 feet.

8. Late for appointments. In order to limit the number of patients in the office at the same time, if you are more than 10 minutes late to your appointment, you will be asked to reschedule.
* Please note: Due to these unusual circumstances, there will be a $40 fee for no-shows. To avoid this, please call the office at least 24 hours before your scheduled exam to reschedule.

9. Disinfecting. It has been and will continue to be our policy to thoroughly disinfect the office before and after each patient arrives. We will have new hand sanitizer stations throughout the office and ask you kindly to please sanitize your hands upon entering and leaving.

South Jersey’s Comprehensive Eyecare and Eyewear Center Welcomes Dr. Russell W. Chappius III

Bridgeton, NJ (March 2020) –South Jersey Eye Associates (SJEA) is proud to announce the addition of Dr. Russell W. Chappius III, to the SJEA family. Dr. Chappius will officially join the eyecare and eyewear center as an optometric physician on July 1, 2020.

Both Dr. Brandon J. Wuzzardo and Dr. Michael A. Feinstein, optometric physicians at SJEA, expressed enthusiasm for the newest member of their staff.

“We’re thrilled to have Dr. Chappius, a highly trained and caring physician, join South Jersey Eye Associates,” said Dr. Wuzzardo, “Being from the area, many of our patients already know Dr. Chappius personally. He is a great addition to our team and will help us continue to provide our patients with Eyecare At Its Best .”

Dr. Chappius will graduate from Salus University in May with extensive training in primary eye care.  He completed internships and clinical observation at The Eye Institute and South Jersey Eye Associates, where he observed under Dr. Wuzzardo. He has also completed externships at Bear Eye Associates and The Wilmington VA Medical Center. Most recently, Dr. Chappius completed training to fit scleral lenses and is currently completing his final externship at The Eye Institute with an emphasis on Low Vision.

“Dr. Chappius is a Bridgeton native who knows our area and our way of life,” states Dr. Feinstein, who will be retiring this June, “He has the same values as myself and Dr. Wuzzardo; and will do a great job of filling my shoes which is very comforting to know.”

Dr. Chappius currently lives in Pennsylvania with his wife Allison and intends to return to South Jersey this summer. Dr. Chappius exclaims, “Returning to my hometown and taking care of its vision needs was always part of the plan.”

What Every Diabetic Should Know About Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic Retinopathy, a progressive disease of the retina, is a common complication of diabetes and one of the leading causes of blindness. The condition occurs when small blood vessels in the back of the eye are damaged by a build-up of glucose or fructose. This damage causes progressive vision loss in two ways: proliferative retinopathy, when abnormal blood vessels form and leak into the center of the eye, and macular edema, when fluid leaks into the macula, the part of the eye responsible for sharp central vision. Sometimes the blood vessels in the eye will provide the clearest indication of broader medical disorders like diabetes and hypertension, telling the story that the rest of the body may not.

Anyone with diabetes—type 1 or type 2—is at risk for diabetic retinopathy. The disease often has no early warning signs and can become advanced without any outward indications, which is why it is critical for all diabetics to get a comprehensive dilated eye exam at least once a year. Blurred vision, “floaters”, and double vision can all be symptoms of diabetic retinopathy, but an individual at risk should not wait for symptoms before scheduling an exam. With timely treatment and care, most patients with diabetic retinopathy can avoid substantial vision loss.

As you partake in summer celebrations, SJEA and the Prevent Blindness America urge you to be aware of the risks associated with fireworks—especially now that certain fireworks are legal in NJ.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 9,000 fireworks-related injuries occur every year. A significant number of these injuries involve the eye—with the most common victim being children under the age of 15.

May is Healthy Vision Month. Healthy Eyes Start With a Dilated Eye Exam

Different from the basic eye exam one has to get for glasses or contact lenses, comprehensive dilated eye exams can help protect your sight by making sure you are seeing your best and detecting eye diseases in their early stages, before vision loss has occurred.

A comprehensive dilated eye exam includes the following:
• Dilation —Drops are placed in your eyes to dilate, or widen, the pupils. Your eye care professional uses a special magnifying lens to examine your retina to look for signs of damage and other eye problems, such as diabetic retinopathy or age-related macular degeneration. A dilated eye exam also allows your doctor to check for damage to the optic nerve that occurs when a person has glaucoma. After the examination, your close-up vision may remain blurred for several hours.
• Tonometry —This test helps to detect glaucoma by measuring eye pressure. Your eye care professional may direct a quick puff of air onto the eye, or gently apply a pressure-sensitive tip near or against the eye. Numbing drops may be applied to your eye for this test. Elevated pressure is a possible sign of glaucoma.
• Visual field test —This test measures your side (peripheral) vision. It helps your eye care professional find out if you have lost side vision, a sign of glaucoma.
• Visual acuity test —This eye chart test measures how well you see at various distances.

Signs of Dyslexia

If you know a child who has dyslexia, one of the things he has in common with other children who have this problem is poor reading ability. This can be true in spite of good intelligence, supportive parents, and strong motivation. If a child has dyslexia he may find it difficult to understand what others see or hear or to distinguish one letter or word from another. Words and letters confuse them. They confuse b with d, saw with was, 12 with 21, etc. When they try to draw geometric figures, squares become rounded, oblique lines become vertical or horizontal or vice versa. Sometimes the frustrations in learning cause serious emotional problems.

These are just some of the problems associated with dyslexia. It is a serious handicap and no one knows exactly what causes it. Fortunately, the majority of children are born without this problem. If your child experiences difficulty in learning how to read because of a vision problem, help is available from your eye doctor to correct it.

Can Your Child See Well?

If you have doubts about your child’s vision, here are some signs to look for.

How do his eyes look to you? Are they red-rimmed or encrusted? Are her eyelids swollen? Does he complain that his eyes itch or burn or feel scratchy? When she’s reading or watching television for a long time, does she complain of headaches? Do things look blurry to him sometimes?

Blinking and squinting are also signs of vision problems. So is becoming irritable or short-tempered from a headache or eye strain after studying for a long time.

You may think your child is clumsy when he or she stumbles over objects occasionally, things that any normal youngster would see and avoid. But the problem may be an issue with the eyes, not clumsiness.

Your child’s eyes are an important part of his life and health. They deserve a regular check-up too. If your child needs help, only a complete eye examination will tell you.

Aging and Eye Changes

If you’re over the age of 40, chances are you now use reading glasses or bifocals to improve the clarity of your vision. This is a natural consequence of aging as the eyes’ focusing muscles become weaker and other changes occur in the eyes. With advancing age, however, a person’s vision can also be subject to serious diseases that may cause visual loss if not treated early enough.

One of these eye diseases is senile macular degeneration or SMD. SMD attacks a part of the eye known as the macula, located in the retina at the back of the eye. The macula is a light-sensing nerve tissue that lines the inside of the eyes. It makes it possible for you to see an object in detail. One of the symptoms of SMD is loss of the ability to read and see objects clearly.

The need to detect eye problems and diseases as early as possible is one of the best reasons why you should have regular eye exams. If you haven’t had an eye exam recently, make an appointment with your eye doctor now.

The Importance of Vision Balance

Sometimes the information coming in through the eyes does not get through quickly enough, or is unreliable when it reaches the brain. It happens in offices, in factories, in schools, at home. It has been known to cause accidents, dangerous mistakes, and even learning difficulties in school children.

Your optometrist, after a thorough examination, can provide proper lenses to balance the convergence and focusing mechanisms and to rearrange the brain’s matching process. Thus, your intelligence actually becomes greater, because the experience becomes accurate, and learning easier, since the incoming information is more reliable.

These lenses also, through reflex action, can affect other bodily functions. Sometimes patients complain, “These lenses I’ve been wearing make me sick to my stomach.”

Age Related Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration is fairly common among the elderly. The macula is the portion of the retina responsible for clear, sharp, central vision. Occasionally, the waste products of some of the cells in the macula are not removed as they normally are. Instead, they just clump together, so that when you look directly at an object, you can’t see it clearly.

It’s as though you had a piece of dirt on a camera film. Light just can’t reach the film through the dirt to give a clear picture. However, your side (peripheral) vision is not affected. It doesn’t matter how strong a lens we put in front of these eyes. If the light can’t reach the macula, you’re not going to see what you’re looking at very clearly.

So, if you see a dark spot in the center of your visual field, it would be wise to have a thorough eye examination. If caught early enough, those dead cells in the macula can be treated with a laser beam and vision often improved.

Do I Need Glasses?

If you’ve never worn glasses before but are experiencing symptoms that suggest you might need them, you should have your eyes examined. Your eyes are always changing, and when you have a vision problem these changes become quite noticeable. For instance, if you’ve been suffering from headaches associated with eye strain, that’s a warning signal.

Other warning signs include blurred vision, a pain of any kind in the eye, distorted vision, and the habit of squinting when you have difficulty seeing something. Other signs that indicate you should waste no time in having your eyes examined are irritation and fatigue. Whatever your job happens to be, your ability to see well is important. So is your ability to see clearly when you’re relaxing or working at home or enjoying some of your favorite recreations.

Sight is precious, and the ability to see well should be protected. If you have any symptoms that suggest you should have your eyes examined to find out if you need glasses, make an appointment with your eye doctor now.

High Risk for Eye Cancer

The National Cancer Institute states that exposure to strong sunlight, particularly in early childhood, may increase the risk of intraocular malignant melanoma (eye cancer). This disease affects about 2,000 people each year and can be fatal if left untreated.

Being born in the south, having blue eyes, indulging in sun bathing and not wearing sunglasses all appear to increase the risk. Being born in the south increases the risk three-fold. Blue-eyed people had the highest risk. Brown-eyed people were 60% less likely to develop the disease.

Some practical advice: Always shield your youngster’s eyes from the sun with hat or sunglasses. By filtering out the ultra-violet light rays, they also help prevent night blindness. As we get older, the crystalline lens of the eye helps in filtering out these harmful rays. Heed the advice of these experts and avoid undue exposure to sunlight unless you have adequate eye protection.

Color Vision Explained

The sky is blue, the grass is green, the sun a burning yellow, but why? We know that white light is really a composite of the colors orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. The retina, which receives the light, contains three types of color sensors called red, green and blue cones. The red cones respond to the longer wave-lengths of light, the green cones to the middle range, and the blue cones to the short wave-lengths.

The brain has to juggle all of this different wave-length information and funnel it through the retina’s 5 million cones before we get a precisely painted picture of what our eyes have seen. This constantly changing stream of images from the world to our mind gives patterns of color at speed of light.

This amazing visual system works reliably in all but a tiny percent of the American population. When it does not, the result is color blindness.

Night Blindness

Many people have more difficulty seeing clearly at night than they should. This condition is called Nyctalopia in which the retina does not regenerate a pigment called visual purple. This purplish-red pigment prevents night blindness but can become bleached out when the eyes are exposed to strong sunlight or if the retina is deficient in vitamin A.

This condition should not be confused with the normal reduction of vision we all experience at night. The reason for this is that as the light gets less, the pupil (that little hole in the center of the eye) opens wider to allow more light to enter. As photographers know, the smaller the aperture, the sharper the picture. So when the pupil gets larger, the “picture” is not quite as sharp.

Not sure? Your optometrist can measure your dark adaptation and determine if you have night blindness. He may prescribe sunglasses to block out infrared rays of the sun or may suggest an increase of vitamin A in your diet.

The Dry Eye

The normal eye is kept moist by a thin film of tears on its surface. Most of these tears are produced by glands under the upper lid and are spread across the cornea with each blink. If tear production is reduced for any of a variety of reasons, you will suffer symptoms of hot, burning, dry eyes. In very severe cases, the cornea may dry, become cloudy and affect your sight.

This is one of the conditions which your optometrist looks for during an eye examination. If indicated, he can perform a simple test to determine the amount of tear fluid you have. If the amount is moderately low, you can gain comfort by using drops of artificial tears. For a critical shortage, a soft contact lens may be indicated to keep the eye moist.

A dry eye can also result if the tear production is normal, but the blink reflex is missing. When this occurs, tears cannot be spread across the eye.

An optometrist does much more than prescribe vision correction for eyes; he or she checks to see that the eyes themselves are functioning properly.
